The Kentucky Derby isn’t just about horse racing, but also fashion. For years the Kentucky Derby has been filled with A-list celebrities who complete their looks with one of a kind hats. Wearing a hat to the Kentucky Derby is not only traditional but is believed to bring good luck.
The Derby hat tradition is as old as the race itself. When the Derby started women used it as an opportunity to wear the latest fashion trends. At that time hats and gloves were part of a woman’s wardrobe. As the years passed and styles evolved, one thing never changed... the women continued wearing hats.
This year the ASHLEYlauren office is buzzing with excitement about the Derby. Ashley Lauren will be attending to cheer on her family's horse, Exaggerator. To help her get ready we’ve teamed up with Miss Priss to put together some style tips.
Elizabeth from Miss Priss broke Derby style down into 3 easy steps. She said, “Every fashionista should have the Kentucky Derby on their bucket list! Of course it's the ‘greatest two minutes in sports’.... but horses often get overshadowed by HATS at this premier people watching event. If you're headed to the track.. keep in mind, you're not fully dressed without a hat, or a fascinator.
1. Think Spring! Colorful, simple dresses work best! You will see an explosion of color at the track.
2. Wear comfortable shoes... most of the day you'll be on concrete, so while you want to be stylish...sandals and wedges are the best choice. If you insist on heels.. be sure to bring flats for the long walk back to the car. My theory... who's looking at your feet anyway when you have an outrageous hat on your head?!?!
3. Hat! Don't show up without one, unless you want to really stand out in the crowd! Some think bigger is better.... others prefer a fascinator. Pick one that compliments your style... but don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Here are a couple looks I put together. I paired ASHLEYlauren cocktail dresses with Christine A Moore hats.”
